The Colorado Department of Law, Consumer Protection Section, is seeking a First Assistant Attorney General to lead the new Technology and Privacy Protection Unit. This is an opportunity for an attorney seeking a leadership position to build the team that develops and implements the Office of the Attorney General's regulatory and enforcement priorities in areas of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and data protection.
The Consumer Protection Section’s strategies are designed to protect Colorado consumers and businesses by upholding Colorado and Federal laws. The Technology and Privacy Protection Unit within the Consumer Protection Section is responsible ensuring consumers are protected while innovation is fostered in Colorado.
The Unit has primary regulatory and enforcement authority of the Colorado Privacy Act and the new Anti-Discrimination in Artificial Intelligence Law, among others. It works closely with other Units in the Consumer Protection section to bring cases to protect Colorado consumers and businesses. The First Assistant Attorney General will work with and manage a multi-disciplinary team tasked with handling data privacy and consumer protection investigations and cases as well as issuing rules addressing emerging technologies.
The First Assistant Attorney General will be involved in investigations and legal actions relating to consumer protection, artificial intelligence, and data privacy with other States' Attorneys General offices and other Colorado law enforcement offices and agencies.
The First Assistant A.G. also will be responsible for analyzing legislative bills, rules and regulations; be involved in educational efforts involving consumer protection and emerging technologies; and will work closely with investigative staff and administrators of consumer programs, such as complaint intake staff. The First facilitates the work and operations of the Unit, promoting collaboration, engagement, integrity, and exceptional legal service.
The ideal candidates will have most, if not all, of the following:
· At least 5 years’ experience as a lawyer with substantial depth in data privacy, emerging technologies, and consumer protection issues
· Demonstrated competency in litigating complex cases
· Prior management or supervisory experience leading a diverse workforce and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as a leader
· Outstanding writing, analytical, and communication skills
· Ability to work collaboratively with a variety and diversity of personalities
· Ability to lead with empathy and be a big-picture problem solver
· Commitment to serving the public interest and/or have prior public sector or public service experience
· Demonstrated ability to build new programs or develop new workstreams/processes

Annual pay: $140K - $186K
